Everything you need to know about tyre bulges

  • Tyre bulges result from internal damage like over/under-inflation, overloading, road conditions or wear and tear.
  • Tyre bulges can be dangerous and increase the risk of a blowout while driving, requiring tyre replacement.
  • Prevent tyre bulges by avoiding overloading, maintaining optimal inflation and driving carefully over speed bumps.

Have you noticed bulges forming in your tyre sidewalls? Are you unsure of what they are or how to get rid of them?

In this article, we’ll be exploring the cause of tyre bulges, whether they’re dangerous and what you should do about them if they appear.

What are tyre bulges?

Tyre bulges, or tyre bubbles, are the name for protruding bulges on the sidewall of a tyre, and they can appear to the eye like ‘bubbles’ in the rubber. Sometimes there may be one present, or sometimes several can form alongside each other.

What causes tyre bulges?

The main cause of tyre bubbles or bulges is damage to the internal components of a tyre. This damage results in a build-up of air pressure which then forms a bulge in the rubber.

There are several possible reasons for this internal damage, including:

  • Over-inflation and under-inflation: Tyres that are over-inflated can push at the side walls, leading to bulges forming, whereas under-inflated tyres can cause heat to build up, also causing the same problem.
  • Overloading a car: When you overload a car, it can put a strain on the tyres, including their inner structure along with overall stretching of the rubber.
  • Road conditions: Potholes, kerbs and speed bumps can impact tyres negatively, reducing their structural integrity.
  • Wear and tear: General wear and tear can result in the rubber wearing down and, therefore, this will decrease the protection the rubber offers to the internal structure of the tyre.
  • Mistake at manufacturing: Another possible cause to consider is a mistake at the manufacturing stage, which could be allowing air to escape between the layers – this would show up soon after purchase or use.

How dangerous are tyre bulges?

Tyre bubbles or bulges are not safe, as they increase your tyre’s risk of a blowout while driving. Ignoring the problem may cause more bulges to form or current bulges to rupture, compromising your safety and that of other road users.

What should I do about tyre bulges?

Unfortunately, tyre bulges cannot be repaired because they indicate damage to the internal structure of a tyre. Therefore, you will need to replace the whole tyre.

How can I prevent tyre bulges?

Sometimes wear and tear or manufacturer defects simply cannot be avoided. However, you can easily make changes to your driving habits, and also make sure that you keep up with your car maintenance.

Just a few things you can do the reduce the likelihood of tyre bulges include:

  • Trying not to overload your vehicle
  • Ensuring that your tyres are at optimum inflation by checking with TPMS or with the help of a specialist
  • Avoiding roads with potholes
  • Driving over speed bumps carefully
  • Regularly inspecting your tyres to take stock of any developing problems
