Cars Celebrating Their 50th Birthday (2021-2022 edition)

The year 2021-2022 is a big one for the team here at Mr Tyre. It’s the year we’re celebrating our landmark 50th birthday. But we’d rather not commemorate this all by ourselves… 

So let’s take a look at some world-famous car models and series that are also sharing in the achievement of turning 50 years old.

Honda Civic 

This trustworthy car has been driving roads around the world since 1972, undergoing many reinventions and enhancements during that time. It’s also a global top-seller and is now in its 11th generation. 

  • 5th best-selling car of all time 
  • Amassed over 24 million sales worldwide 
  • Top speed of 169mph! (10th gen Type R)

Mercedes-Benz S-Class 

A premium entry to the market, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a series of saloon cars and sedans that are celebrated for being luxurious and top-of-the-line. 

  • Safety conscious – 4 spoke steering wheel & collision protected fuel tank
  • In 1980, the Mercedes-Benz S-class (W126) was the first car in Europe to offer airbags 
  • High retention rate – 80% of Western European buyers purchase another 
  • Winner of numerous awards, including Luxury Car of the Year by carwow 

BMW 5 Series

An impressive executive car, the BMW 5 Series was first introduced in 1972 and is now in its 7th generation. 

    • Initially available with a four-cylinder engine
    • Fastest 1972 model achieved 0-60mph in 10.5 seconds
    • Seventh generation received the Luxury Car of the Year Award hosted by What Car? 
  • Currently available as a plug-in hybrid model 

Renault 5

The Renault 5 was once France’s most popular car during the 70s and 80s. And while production ceased in 1996, the Renault 5 is set to make a comeback. 

  • Best-selling car in France between 1972-1986 
  • One of the first cars with plastic bumpers 
  • Spare tyre initially located under the bonnet
  • 2024 will see the Renault 5 revived as an EV hatchback 

Statesman HQ

The grand Statesman cars produced by Holden in 1971 were known for their roomy interiors and luxurious experience. They are still highly desired by collectors. 

  • Sold at Holden dealerships, a subsidiary of Australian General Motors (the Statesman was never available in the UK)
  • Available with a 5.0 litre V8 engine
  • Came with power assisted steering
    • By 1974, the Statesman Caprice was complete with luxury equipment including air con, power-controlled windows and electric locking systems.
