Car Under Trays Explained
Are you wondering what the plastic panel is on the underside of your car and why it’s there?
Known as car undertrays or underbody panels, these large pieces of composite or plastic (sometimes even aluminium) play an important part in protecting the undercarriage of your vehicle from the outside elements. If this panel comes loose or damaged, it can have an impact on your car’s health.
To help you understand the purpose and maintenance needs a bit better, we’ve put together this article on what car underbody panels are, what role they play, and how to tell if they need replacing.
What are car under trays used for?
Car under trays refer to the large panel that is fixed to the central part of your vehicle’s undercarriage that covers the engine and other sensitive components, such as the oil pan and transmission.
This panel acts as a barrier between the components and the road, protecting them from debris, water and much more.
These under trays are also known as engine splash shields, underbody panels, belly pans, skid plates, splash guards, and many other names too.
When are car under trays removed?
Under trays need to remain fixed to your vehicle to successfully protect during use. They should only be removed for access in the event of an oil change or during any work on these components carried out by a professional. Driving with the under tray removed leaves you open to damage and the risk of costly repair work.
When do they need repairing or replacing?
Due to their position, under panels may become damaged over time from uneven surfaces or protruding items you drive over. Once damaged, these panels may loosen or even drag along the road, making it dangerous to drive. At some point in your vehicle’s lifetime a replacement may be required.
Telltale signs that a car under tray has come loose
- A rattling or scraping sound when driving
- Cracks or scrapes on the tray
- A bent or misaligned panel
Should a faulty or loose under tray be left unresolved, it could lead to further under tray damage or expensive damage to the exposed undercarriage, including the engine.
If you suspect a problem, take your vehicle to a professional for their advice. Experts will identify whether there’s an issue before re-fitting, repairing or replacing the tray, depending on the severity of the damage, restoring your vehicle back to roadworthy condition.
